Indian cricketing maestro Virat Kohli continues to etch his name in the annals of cricketing history, scoring his 30th Test century during the first Test against Australia at Perth. The ton, achieved in the second innings, not only silenced his critics after a challenging home season but also reinforced his stature as one of the greatest modern-day cricketers.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, speaking on the ICC Review, lauded Kohli’s approach during the knock. “Virat went back to trusting his game, and he looked like a different player in the second innings than he did in the first. His intent and focus were exceptional,” said Ponting.
Kohli’s Record-Breaking Feats
With this century, Kohli has:
- Scored his 81st international century, narrowing the gap to Sachin Tendulkar’s 100 centuries record.
- Achieved 30 Test centuries in 119 matches, amassing 9,145 runs at an average of 48.13.
- Scored 7 Test centuries in Australia, surpassing Tendulkar’s record of six.
- Become the leading visiting batter with 12 international centuries in Australia, scoring 3,531 runs at an average of 56.95 across all formats.
- Entered the exclusive club of batters with 2,000+ runs in Border-Gavaskar Trophy history, tallying 2,147 runs in 26 matches.
Ponting’s Advice for Australian Batters
Ponting also offered insights into the struggles faced by senior Australian batters Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. Both players have been underwhelming in recent outings, with Labuschagne averaging just 24.50 in six Tests this year and Smith managing 25.55 in the same period.
“Both need to focus on their strengths and play with intent. Thinking about scoring runs rather than worrying about getting out is crucial, especially when you’re not in great form,” Ponting suggested.
Challenges Ahead for India and Australia
The second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting December 6 in Adelaide, will be a day-night affair played with the pink ball. This format is expected to challenge batters with the added swing and seam movement under lights.
India, riding high on a 295-run victory in Perth, will aim to extend their lead in the series. For Australia, the match represents a chance to regroup and stage a comeback on home turf.
