Defending champions India secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Japan in the semifinal of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024, played in Rajgir on Tuesday. With goals from vice-captain Navneet Kaur and Lalaremsiami, India booked their place in the final for the fourth time and will face China in the summit clash on Wednesday, November 20.
Match Highlights
The Women in Blue dominated possession and kept Japan under pressure throughout the match. However, their inability to capitalize on penalty corners was evident as they failed to convert 13 set-pieces before finally breaking the deadlock.
- 48th Minute: Navneet Kaur opened the scoring with a calmly executed penalty stroke after relentless Indian attacks earned them the chance.
- 56th Minute: Lalaremsiami doubled the lead with a brilliant field goal, sealing the victory for India.
Missed Opportunities and Strong Japanese Defense
Despite India’s aggressive play, they struggled to convert their early chances:
- In the 5th minute, captain Salima Tete saw her strike saved by Japanese goalkeeper Yu Kudo, who was instrumental in keeping India at bay.
- Indian players, including Navneet Kaur and Deepika, had multiple attempts thwarted by Kudo during the first half.
- Even into the second half, Deepika had her penalty corner efforts repeatedly denied, underscoring the resilience of Japan’s defense.
India’s perseverance, however, paid off in the final quarter, leading to their clinical finishes in the latter stages of the game.
India’s Road to the Final
With this victory, India has continued its dominant run in the tournament, showcasing solid teamwork and resilience. They now look to defend their title in the final against China, who defeated Malaysia in the other semifinal.
