Shubman Gill Stresses First Innings Total as India Prepares for Gabba Test

Published: December 13, 2024

New Delhi: With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy hanging in the balance, India’s top-order batter Shubman Gill has highlighted the team’s renewed focus on posting big first-innings totals as they gear up for the crucial third Test against Australia at the Gabba.

Gill, who missed the first Test due to a finger injury, made an impactful return in Adelaide despite India’s 10-wicket loss. Ahead of the Brisbane match, he emphasized the importance of a strong batting performance to set the tone for the series.

“As a batting group, we are looking to post a big total first up. That’s been the key discussion, and every batter has his own game plan,” Gill said during a pre-match press conference.

Batting Woes in Focus

India’s batting struggles have been a recurring theme, with the team posting six totals of 150 or less in recent outings. Gill acknowledged the issue, stressing that the group is determined to rectify it.

“Adelaide Test, we didn’t do well, but the series is still 1-1. We will treat it as a three-match Test series, and if we win this one, we will have the advantage going into Melbourne and Sydney,” he added.

Preparation and Criticism

The optional training session ahead of the Gabba Test saw some notable absences, including skipper Rohit Sharma. When asked about this, Gill said, “This was an optional session, and he has already practised a lot.”

The decision comes amid criticism from former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, who recently called out underperforming players for skipping optional net sessions despite having significant breaks between matches.

The Road Ahead

India faces a formidable challenge at the Gabba, often regarded as Australia’s fortress. A strong first-innings performance could tilt the balance in favor of the visitors, who are looking to build momentum as the series progresses to Melbourne and Sydney.

With Gill back in the side and the batting unit focused on improvement, India’s approach in Brisbane will be crucial in determining their fortunes in the series.
