The hosting rights for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 remain in the spotlight as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi engaged in critical discussions with Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) head Mubashir Usmani in Dubai. The meeting centered around the proposal of a “hybrid model” for the tournament, which is scheduled for February-March next year.
PCB’s Preparedness and Standpoint
In a statement following the meeting, Naqvi reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to host the Champions Trophy, emphasizing that preparations, including construction work at the designated stadiums, are on track. He assured that the country would provide state-level security to all participating teams and expressed the enthusiasm of Pakistani fans for hosting the prestigious event.
“Pakistan is fully prepared to host the Champions Trophy. The situation is stable, and we are committed to providing a world-class experience for players and fans alike,” Naqvi stated.
The ‘Hybrid’ Model Debate
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has proposed a hybrid model in light of India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan, citing security concerns. Under this model, Pakistan would host the majority of the tournament, while India’s matches would be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
However, Pakistan has so far resisted this proposal, calling for all matches to be held on home soil. At an emergency ICC meeting held in Dubai on Friday, Naqvi reiterated the PCB’s stance. Despite gaining sympathy from several ICC board members, the body urged Pakistan to consider the hybrid model as the most practical solution to the ongoing impasse.
ICC’s Firm Deadline
The ICC has reportedly issued an ultimatum to the PCB: either accept the hybrid hosting model or risk losing the hosting rights entirely. This development follows an inconclusive meeting of the ICC executive board, where no consensus was reached on the tournament’s schedule due to Pakistan’s objections.
What Lies Ahead
If the hybrid model is adopted, matches involving India would be relocated to the UAE, ensuring the participation of all teams while addressing India’s security concerns.
This ongoing dispute reflects broader geopolitical tensions, but cricket enthusiasts worldwide hope for a resolution that prioritizes the spirit of the game and ensures a successful Champions Trophy.
