New Delhi: New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has extended the contract of Ben Sawyer, the head coach of the White Ferns, for an additional two years. Sawyer’s reappointment follows New Zealand’s historic victory in the Women’s T20 World Cup in October 2024, held in the UAE. This was the White Ferns’ first-ever T20 World Cup title, marking a significant milestone in New Zealand’s cricketing history.
Sawyer, who first took charge in June 2022, has been credited with fostering belief and trust within the team. His extended tenure will now run until October 2026, providing him the opportunity to defend the T20 World Cup title in England and Wales in 2026, as well as pursue the ODI World Cup crown next year in India.
NZC Praises Sawyer’s Leadership
NZC’s Head of Women’s High Performance, Liz Green, emphasized the importance of stability and continuity, stating:
“We’re so pleased to have Ben sign on for another two years. He’s unlocked a lot of belief and trust in this group, and to have him stay now is massive, both for the current squad and the long-term planning for the White Ferns.”
Green also highlighted the growth of the young players who debuted under Sawyer’s guidance, noting their impressive performances in the recent T20 World Cup.
“There was a huge amount of growth during that tournament, a result of what Ben and the coaches have been building over the last two years.”
Captain Sophie Devine Expresses Joy
White Ferns captain Sophie Devine expressed her delight at Sawyer’s reappointment, praising his transformative impact on the team and women’s cricket in New Zealand.
“I’m stoked Ben’s re-signed with us. The work he’s done with the White Ferns group and for women’s cricket in New Zealand has been huge. The team is in a great spot right now, so I think locking him in for another two years and having that consistency will be big for us.”
Future Challenges for the White Ferns
The White Ferns will next face arch-rivals Australia in a three-match ODI series at Basin Reserve, Wellington. The squad for the series will be announced later this week.
Sawyer’s reappointment signals New Zealand’s commitment to building on recent successes and setting their sights on future ICC titles. With the team growing under his leadership, the White Ferns are poised to remain a dominant force in women’s cricket.
