In a major step to boost women’s cricket in Andhra Pradesh, former India captain Mithali Raj has been appointed as the Mentor of Women’s Cricket Operations at the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA). Mithali, who retired from international cricket in June 2022, has signed a three-year contract with ACA, marking another significant milestone in her illustrious career.
Role and Vision
Mithali will play a pivotal role in scouting and grooming young cricketing talent across the state. ACA Secretary S. Satish Babu confirmed the development, emphasizing the long-term goals associated with Mithali’s appointment.
“Mithali has signed a three-year contract with us to scout and nurture talent in Andhra Pradesh. Her leadership and experience will give a new direction to women’s cricket in the state,” Satish Babu said.
High-Performance Academy for Women Cricketers
To complement Mithali’s efforts, ACA is setting up a state-of-the-art High-Performance Academy in Anantapur. This initiative will provide year-round training to about 80 girls from various age groups.
The academy will feature:
- Comprehensive cricketing and academic training over 365 days.
- Specialized support staff for skill development and physical conditioning.
- On-site medical personnel to ensure player well-being.
“This academy is part of our long-term vision to develop women’s cricket. While immediate results are not expected, the focus is on building a strong foundation through physical and skill-based training,” Satish Babu added.
Mithali’s Recommendations
Mithali has already proposed organizing regular Under-15 matches against teams from other states to help young players gain exposure and confidence early in their careers.
Plans for Men’s High-Performance Academy
In addition to the women’s academy, ACA plans to establish a High-Performance Academy for men in Vizianagaram. This facility will cater to state and national players, ensuring access to top-tier training resources.
Focus on Rural Talent
ACA aims to uncover hidden talent in the state’s rural areas. Teams will conduct scouting drives in remote regions to identify promising players who can benefit from long-term training programs under Mithali’s guidance.
With Mithali Raj at the helm of women’s cricket operations, ACA is set to transform the landscape of cricket in Andhra Pradesh, creating opportunities and nurturing talent for the future.
