Jasprit Bumrah has achieved a historic milestone in his cricketing career, ascending to the top of the ICC Test Bowling Rankings after a career-best performance against Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
The Indian pacer earned 883 rating points, surpassing South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada and Australia’s Josh Hazlewood to claim the No. 1 spot. Bumrah’s remarkable effort included an eight-wicket haul at the Optus Stadium in Perth, a match where India triumphed by a massive 295-run margin.
Heroics in Perth
Leading the side in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Bumrah delivered a captain’s performance, rattling the Australian batting order. His fiery spells, particularly on the first day and in the final session on Day 3, set the tone for India’s dominance.
Bumrah’s heroics helped India defend a modest first-innings total of 150 runs, as he picked crucial wickets to restrict Australia to just 104 in their second innings. His relentless bowling earned him the Player of the Match award.
Battle for the Top Spot Continues
While Bumrah now sits atop the rankings, the race for the No. 1 spot remains intense. Rabada, with 872 rating points, has a chance to reclaim the position as South Africa takes on Sri Lanka in Durban. With three more Tests to play against Australia in December, Bumrah will look to consolidate his lead.
Other Indian Bowlers Shine
India’s Ravichandran Ashwin also climbed to the fourth spot in the ICC Test Bowling Rankings with 807 points, despite not featuring in the Perth Test. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja dropped to seventh due to his absence in the series opener.

Australia Faces Setbacks
Australia’s captain Pat Cummins had a tough outing in Perth, managing just three wickets for 153 runs across both innings. This dropped him to sixth place in the rankings.
With India leading the five-match series 1-0, all eyes are now on the second Test in Adelaide, which will be a pink-ball day-night encounter. The Indian camp will hope for Bumrah to continue his dominant run and lead them to another victory Down Under.
