New Delhi: Former England cricketer and renowned commentator Isa Guha has publicly apologized for her controversial remark about Indian vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah during the ongoing Gabba Test between India and Australia. The incident occurred on Day 2 of the match, when Guha referred to Bumrah as the “Most Valuable Primate” (MVP) during commentary, sparking widespread criticism and debate online.
Guha’s Apology on Live Television
Before the start of play on Day 3, Guha addressed the controversy during Fox Sports’ live broadcast. Acknowledging the sensitivity of the issue, she expressed regret and clarified that her remark was unintentional.
“Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. Firstly, I’d like to apologise for any offence caused,” Guha said.
She emphasized her admiration for Bumrah and explained her intentions.
“I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect of others. If you listen to the full transcript, I only meant the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players, someone I admire greatly. I was trying to frame the enormity of his achievement, but I chose the wrong word. For that, I am deeply sorry.”
Guha also noted her South Asian heritage, hoping that this would assure viewers of her genuine intentions.
Support from the Commentary Team
Former India coach Ravi Shastri and Australian legend Adam Gilchrist, who were part of the broadcast team, commended Guha for taking accountability on live television.
“Brave woman! To apologise on live television takes some steel,” Shastri remarked. “People are entitled to make mistakes; we are all human. In the heat of the moment, sometimes when you have the mic in your hand, things can happen. Let’s move on.”
Gilchrist echoed these sentiments, urging viewers to put the issue to rest.
Context of the Comment
The incident unfolded during a discussion between Guha and Brett Lee about Bumrah’s exceptional bowling performance in Australia’s first innings, where he claimed six wickets. While Lee highlighted Bumrah’s impactful spell, Guha commented, “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? Most Valuable Primate, Jasprit Bumrah.”
Although intended as praise, the choice of words led to significant backlash, prompting Guha to issue her apology.
Focus Back on the Game
With Guha’s apology now public, the focus shifts back to the cricket. Bumrah’s six-wicket haul helped India restrict Australia to 445 runs in their first innings. However, India’s top order faltered under pressure, reaching 22/3 by lunch on Day 2.
As rain continues to disrupt play, India’s chances of salvaging a draw hinge on their ability to withstand Australia’s relentless attack.
