Injury Concerns for Team India as Shubman Gill Suffers Finger Injury Ahead of Border-Gavaskar Opener

New Delhi, November 16, 2024

Team India is grappling with injury concerns ahead of the highly anticipated first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 against Australia. Star batter Shubman Gill reportedly sustained a finger injury during a match simulation session at the WACA Stadium in Perth.

Gill, who has been a cornerstone of India’s batting lineup, injured his left-hand finger while fielding in the slips on Day 2 of the training match. He left the field immediately and did not return for the remainder of the session. Although the extent of the injury is unclear, it raises questions about his availability for the series opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth, starting November 22.

Injury Woes Pile Up

Gill’s injury adds to India’s growing list of concerns. KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan have also picked up knocks during training:

  • KL Rahul was hit on his right elbow by a rising delivery from Prasidh Krishna during a match simulation. He left the field after seeking medical attention and did not bat again.
  • Sarfaraz Khan sustained a blow to his elbow while batting in the nets on Thursday. However, reports suggest his injury is less severe, and he did not require an MRI.

Additionally, Rohit Sharma’s availability for the first Test remains uncertain. The Indian skipper welcomed a baby boy with his wife Ritika Sajdeh on Friday, and while there’s hope he will join the squad in time, no confirmation has been made.

Team Selection Challenges

If Rohit Sharma is unavailable for the first Test, India will face a selection dilemma for their opening pair. Options include:

  • Abhimanyu Easwaran
  • KL Rahul, if fit
  • Shubman Gill, should he recover in time

Gill’s Form and Role

Gill has been in stellar form, cementing his place at No. 3 after initially debuting as an opener. His absence would be a significant blow to India’s batting order, particularly against a formidable Australian pace attack in their home conditions.

Upcoming Schedule

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will kick off on November 22 in Perth, with subsequent matches scheduled across iconic Australian venues. India will be eager to address their injury concerns and field their best XI to defend the coveted trophy.
