Team India scripted history with an extraordinary comeback victory against Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Optus Stadium, Perth. Overcoming an initial setback, India became the first visiting team to triumph in a Test at the venue, defeating the hosts by a massive 295 runs.
After being dismissed for just 150 in the first innings, India’s bowlers and batters staged a sensational turnaround, leaving the Australian team and their supporters stunned.
Day 1 Drama: Bowlers Dominate
Winning the toss, India opted to bat on a lively pitch but managed only 150 runs as Australian pacers Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins ran riot. However, Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah led a spirited bowling performance, taking 5/30 as Australia was bundled out for a paltry 104. Debutant Harshit Rana also impressed, adding crucial breakthroughs.
By the end of Day 1, 17 wickets had fallen, setting the tone for a thrilling contest.
Day 2: Indian Openers Shine
With a slender yet crucial 46-run lead, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul batted with remarkable patience and resilience. Jaiswal, in particular, showcased his maturity, reaching his maiden Test century in Australia. The duo’s 172-run opening stand drained the Australian bowlers as India ended the day in a commanding position.
Day 3: Kohli and Jaiswal Star
Jaiswal’s marathon innings of 161 laid the foundation for a massive Indian total. Veteran batter Virat Kohli, hailed as “The King,” joined the party with his second century at Optus Stadium, remaining unbeaten on 100. Kohliβs knock, along with contributions from Rahul (77), helped India post a mammoth 487/6 declared, setting Australia a near-impossible target of 534 runs.
Day 4: Bumrah and Co. Seal the Deal
Chasing 534, Australia crumbled under the relentless pressure of India’s bowlers. Bumrah struck early, removing Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne, reducing the hosts to 12/3. Despite a fighting 89 from Travis Head and contributions from Mitchell Marsh, the target proved insurmountable.
Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana provided key breakthroughs, and fittingly, Rana dismissed Alex Carey to seal the historic victory for India.
Bumrah, with match figures of 8/72, was named Player of the Match for his outstanding leadership and exceptional bowling performance.
Looking Ahead
India now leads the five-match series 1-0, with the second Test set to be a day-night fixture in Adelaide starting on December 6. The Men in Blue will look to capitalize on their momentum and extend their dominance.
Brief Scores:
- India: 150 & 487/6 declared (Jaiswal 161, Kohli 100*)
- Australia: 104 (Bumrah 5/30) & 238 (Head 89; Bumrah 3/42)
