London: England’s new manager, Thomas Tuchel, has confirmed that Harry Kane will continue as the country’s captain, dispelling any speculation about leadership changes under his reign. Kane, who has been instrumental in England’s recent successes, retains Tuchel’s trust as the Three Lions prepare for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
Tuchel, appointed in October as Gareth Southgate’s successor, addressed the media following the World Cup qualifying draw. England has been placed in Group K, alongside Serbia, Albania, Latvia, and Andorra, with the campaign set to begin in March 2025.
Tuchel’s Trust in Kane
“There is, at the moment, no need to think about change,” Tuchel stated emphatically. “Harry was always a top captain for England. Why even think about a change right now?”
Tuchel emphasized Kane’s leadership qualities while hinting at a comprehensive assessment of the squad before finalizing the group for the qualifiers. “You cross the river when you cross the river. Come January, we will be in touch with everyone, get the feeling for St. George’s Park, and evaluate the players. Until March, there’s still a lot of football to be played.”
A Fresh Start for Players
While Kane’s captaincy is secure, Tuchel suggested that all players will start with a clean slate under his tenure. This approach reflects his desire to make independent decisions, free from the influence of the previous management.
One key player Tuchel is keen to reconnect with is Arsenal defender Ben White, who last featured for England during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. White left the squad midway through the tournament for personal reasons, leading to rumors of a fallout with Southgate’s staff, which were later denied.
“I will reach out to him,” Tuchel revealed. “It should be a clean start and a clear narrative. From January, I’ll be watching games and speaking to everyone, including Ben.”
World Cup Qualifiers on the Horizon
Tuchel’s England project begins with a challenging yet manageable schedule. The condensed fixtures leave little time for squad evaluation before the qualifiers, but Tuchel is optimistic.
“I like the framework,” Tuchel explained. “To start when World Cup qualification begins gives clarity to the selection process and our goals.”
Tuchel plans to attend Premier League matches in January to closely assess players. “I will be in stadiums from January and will try to speak to players while respecting their busy schedules, especially in the Premier League.”
Group K Fixtures
England’s World Cup qualifying group offers a mix of competition and opportunity. While Serbia poses a significant challenge, matches against Albania, Latvia, and Andorra are seen as ideal for refining tactics and building cohesion.
With just 15 months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, Tuchel’s journey as England’s manager promises to be an exciting chapter, with a clear focus on developing a cohesive, competitive team ready to take on the world.
