Mohammed Shami, one of India’s premier fast bowlers, is racing against time to prove his fitness and secure a spot in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. After returning to competitive cricket following a prolonged injury layoff, Shami is under strict monitoring by the BCCI’s medical team, which has outlined a challenging path for his return to international cricket.
Fitness Mandate and Monitoring
Shami, who impressed during his Ranji Trophy comeback for Bengal, is currently being evaluated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). The BCCI has reportedly set a condition for him to lose weight and improve his overall fitness to meet the demands of high-intensity international cricket.
BCCI’s Head of Sports Science Nitin Patel and NCA trainer Nishant Bordoloi are overseeing his rehabilitation and training, ensuring Shami builds endurance while participating in Bengal’s domestic matches. A source close to the matter stated:
“The medical team believes his fitness will improve as he plays more matches. However, to sustain intensity over a Test series requires a different level of preparation.”
SMAT as a Yardstick
Shami began his SMAT stint on November 23, with the medical team closely monitoring his performances over 10 days. Although his performance in T20 games isn’t a perfect parameter for Test cricket, it will give selectors an indication of his readiness.
There is speculation that Shami could join the Indian Test squad for training if he clears the fitness benchmarks. However, selectors are cautious about rushing him back, considering the ICC Champions Trophy in February 2025.
Potential Comeback Timeline
If Shami successfully completes his fitness regime, he could make a return to the team for the third Test, scheduled to begin on December 14. His return would bolster an already formidable pace attack led by Jasprit Bumrah, who took eight wickets in the first Test.
India’s Dominant Start Without Shami
Despite Shami’s absence, India’s bowling unit excelled in the opening Test in Perth. Stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah led from the front, supported by Mohammed Siraj (5 wickets) and debutant Harshit Rana (4 wickets), as India registered a commanding 295-run victory.
Looking Ahead
Shami’s inclusion could further strengthen India’s prospects in the high-profile series. However, the BCCI and team management remain cautious, focusing on his long-term fitness to ensure he is fully prepared for both the ongoing series and the Champions Trophy.
