Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan has regained his position as the No. 1 ODI bowler, taking advantage of Pakistan’s decision to rest Shaheen Afridi during the ongoing series against Zimbabwe. The ICC’s latest rankings update sees Rashid climbing to the top with 687 rating points, while Afridi slips to second place with 682 points.
Pakistan’s Rotation Strategy Impacts Afridi’s Rankings
Pakistan opted for a second-string squad for their tour of Zimbabwe, resting key players like Shaheen Afridi and Babar Azam to manage workloads. While this move allowed the team to test its bench strength, Afridi’s absence from the series has cost him crucial rating points. He last played an ODI earlier this month and has since been overtaken by Rashid, who hasn’t featured in an ODI since November 11.
Afridi is unlikely to recover his top spot immediately, as he will miss the third and final ODI of the series in Bulawayo on November 28.
Indian Trio Shines in ODI Rankings
India continues to be well-represented in the top 10 of the ICC ODI Bowling Rankings:
- Kuldeep Yadav is ranked 4th, maintaining his stellar form.
- Jasprit Bumrah holds the 7th position, following his consistent performances.
- Mohammed Shami is placed 8th, highlighting India’s dominance in white-ball bowling.
Saim Ayub’s Meteoric Rise
Young Pakistan opener Saim Ayub was the standout performer in the second ODI against Zimbabwe. Chasing a modest target of 146, Ayub smashed a breathtaking 113* off just 62 balls, including 17 fours and three sixes. His blistering knock secured a 10-wicket victory for Pakistan and propelled him 80 places up the ICC ODI batting rankings, from 170th to 90th, with a career-best 451 rating points.
What’s Next?
The series decider between Pakistan and Zimbabwe will be played at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on November 28. Pakistan, led by Mohammad Rizwan, will aim to clinch the series, while Zimbabwe will look to pull off an upset.
